About Q'anjob'al

Q’anjob’al or Kanjobal is part of the Mayan family spoken primarily in Guatemala and parts of Mexico and the US. It is widely spoken in the highlands of the Huehuetenango department of Guatemala with an estimated 208,008 speakers.

Q’anjob’al is taught in public schools where it carries heritage, traditions, and wisdom of generations. The cultural and historical depth of the language faces modernization causing the need for preservation and revitalization efforts. Q’anjob’al community emphasizes its role in the collective memory of its language. Identity, culture, and beliefs are part of the Q’anjob’al language where it encapsulates its unique linguistic features.
