About Ixil

The Ixil language is part of the Mayan family spoken primarily in Guatemala with speakers present in Mexico and the US. It is estimated that there are 133,329 speakers in Guatemala. The municipalities where Ixil is spoken includes San Gaspar Chajul, San Juan Cotzal and Santa Maria Nebaj in the Quiche department.

Ixil is not only communication but a bridge for passing down traditions, ceremonial knowledge, and heritage from elders to younger generations. The Ixil community connects with their roots and learns from the experience of their elders, as Ixil culture and language is intricately tied with their spirituality and reflects resilience and determination.
